9 Harsh Life Lessons That Can Make You Stronger
The greatest lessons we learn in life are not taught at school, but by life itself. Sometimes they can be harsh, but they help us to maneuver between casual troubles and avoid unnecessary frustrations.

1. Parenthood is not an easy task.
When you become a parent, there’s this feeling that you will always have to take care of your kids. And it is true until they reach a certain age. When children grow up, they no longer want you to take care of them and this is when the sacred bond between parents and their children becomes vulnerable.
The best way to deal with this change is to be friends with your children. Show them that they can actually spend quality time with you. Instead of being an annoying parent, be a supportive companion.
2. Stop waiting for the perfect moment.
The main characters of the famous movie Bucket List, which starred Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, only dared to fulfill their craziest dreams when they found out that they had an ominous diagnoses. To avoid their unfortunate fate, stop looking for excuses to postpone your dream.
Making important decisions can be scary, and we subconsciously postpone them, thinking that it isn’t the right moment to do things. Well, there will never be a right moment. If you want to change your job or leave everything behind to travel the world, do it now. The longer you wait for it, the more regrets (and reasons to not do something) you generate.
3. It hurts to grow up.
None of us will live forever. Sadly, this also applies to our parents. No matter how harsh it sounds, we will always feel like children whenever they are around.
Loving parents give us unbelievable level of comfort and will support us in situations when everybody else won’t. We should all cherish every moment we spend with them, because, the truth is, we will never be ready to actually grow up.
4. Live in the moment to avoid unnecessary regrets.
When we are young, we tend to think that we have our whole life ahead of us. So, instead of doing things we like, we do things that we have to do. We go to school, finish college, create a career, but we usually forget to be happy. After all, we could end up old, with the realization that we missed the opportunity to enjoy the life we lived.
Fortunately, recent surveys have shown that millennials pursue a balanced life, as much as wealth, and choose purpose over money. It is certainly better to be a part of this statistics, rather than to be included on the list of people who didn’t even try to be happy.
5. Don’t be afraid of mistakes.
Since school we are used to being punished for mistakes. Whenever we did something wrong, we received bad marks or were given detention. Little did we know that the most important lessons we learned in life came from mistakes. Moreover, recent studies have shown that this process can actually give us some major satisfaction. So, don’t lose heart if you’ve stumbled. Write down what you learned, accept the lesson, and carry on.
6. Solve your own problems.
However supporting your friends and family were, dealing with your own troubles might be the only way to succeed in this world. It’s impossible to always rely on other people to be there for you, simply because they probably have to deal with their own stuff too.
Remember how in childhood you hated cleaning and grocery shopping, because your mom could always step up and do it? Now that you are grown up, it’s absurd to think that somebody would do chores for you. You have to deal with the real big issues, the same way you deal with minor things.
7. Live through hard times to succeed.
Will Smith’s character from The Pursuit of Happyness is a good example of unbelievable resilience, which, in the end, brought him the happiness he so badly wanted. None of us likes it when life gives us lemons. Nevertheless, overcoming hardships is an important lesson to develop certain social strategies to succeed in the future, studies show. People who’ve gone through really grave situations, have proven to be more resilient and happier in life.
8. Set lower expectations to avoid disappointment.
Nothing hurts us more than our own expectations that didn’t come true. And although it’s good to dream big, sometimes we just have to fit our wishes to our reality. You can’t climb Everest if you have altitude sickness. So maybe instead you improve your cycling skills and travel cross-country by bicycle?
9. Develop patience to achieve something big.
Patience is a virtue, the old saying says. Since ancient times people have learned that the ability to wait for a desirable result without frustration is hard and is actually frustrating.
Obtaining this skill, though, can actually benefit you in many ways. It teaches you how to be cooperative, cope with your failures, and achieve better results. So, instead of concentrating on your failures, think that every mistake yields the result you so badly desire.
