I have an 8 yr old Maine Coon mix and I had to smile at several of the descriptions! Wherever I am he is and this includes my shower! I love hearing him talk though. He will also paw at my shirt when he wants to take a nap. He has to settle for going under a blanket.
My girl, Paris, is a mixed breed Maine Soon. Affectionate and VERY chatty. She doesn't play with water but she must have her bowl of water AND her fountain. No closed doors. Where I am Paris is.
They dont like to be picked up? Thats crap... every single cat is different, my 12 kilo maine coon loves to be picked up, he even makes a specific sound when he thinks its time to hold him as a baby. And the others ( i have 5 maine coons) they all love it to be hold in my arms and look over my shoulders, one even licks my face while doing so. They all have their own ways, 1 cats might not like it but it all depens on how you pick them up. 🤔 i got my mom a british short hair cat amd the breeder said she hated to be picked up so i just picked it up and she was even purring and rubbing her face to mine and i want to put her down and she even clinched to my arm so i had to hold her in my arms... just like a little baby monkey.
Also my big baby Tsunami opens doors, plays fetch and loves to catch candy between his paws or direct in his mouth oh and he listens to his name ( either tsunami or toets) a little doggy in a cats body.
Yup the not liking to be hugged or picked up is crap, my Mainecoon loves hugs (frequently sits himself in front of my work pc for a hug) and doesn't mind being picked up
Saying that Maine Coons don't get to be that big because your 10 months old kitten isn't that big, when it's a known fact that Maine Coons don't reach full size until they're 4-5 years old.... Even my 3/4 Maine Coon got to 20 lbs by the age of 5, and is 2 1/4 feet long. They ARE very large cats.
I have a Maine coon mix also and is very Maine coonie lol he has the silkiest fur I have ever felt in a cat and he absolutely hates being alone. He def requires a lot more play than other common cats. We love him dearly! Oh and my cat loves to be held like a baby especially by my husband so it really just depends on the cat. That goes for their size too. My friend has a full breed Maine coon and he is much larger than a normal house cat.
Aimee is part Maine Coon. She's two and a half and weighs thirteen pounds. She loves to chat by meowing, trilling, and chirping.
Beautiful. I have one that looks near identical
My Maine Coon always wanted to be held. If you didn't pick him up, he'd get in your way until you did.
He was a lap cat who always wanted to sleep on my shoulder.
He's 17 in the photo.
I believe that much if this information is opinion not facts. I have three Maine coons. Two are full grown and over 20# males. Too hard for me to weigh them. My kitten, make, at one years is 16#s. I took him to vet last month for his check up. He is not fat, all muscle.
He does like to play in water and is a cuddle bug. Be snuggles with me all day and sleeps next to me.
He likes to be carried by my husband. Hubby spoils him by carrying him upstairs in downstairs.
He has vocals that mean different things.
The vet told me that they are decended from the Norwegian forest cat.
I have 2 Maine coon cats and they have 2 different personalities . Many of the things mentioned describe all cats. I have had cats in the past that were not Maine coons that knocked everything off shelves. Chewed on plants and played in water. The worst cat I had to tear up everything with its claws was just a plain DSH cat. And both of my maine coins are very large
Morris, looks like a furry 25lb tabby (hence the name). He's 3 and I lucked out when I adopted him from the local humane society. Likes to be held, not handled. Doors must be open and lap prepared for his sitting. Very talkative and can be pretty loud too. No litter box issues and he only paws at the scratch posts I got for him. Previous owner had his front paws declawed and due to this, he does bite a lot. He is my first pet and I love the guy. Likes water but not bath's. Found this out when he got into my fireplace, also when I found out how loud he could be😁
My maine coon is. All thats xecribed and then some ,he is only noisy when something is wrong including someone breaking into home!!!he chose me rather than stay with his owner .long story he is a gentleman and attracts many females allto he is nuetered.he does twirl melodies on reg.convo to me he goes to the door for potty won't use litter has never made mess very social but runs to me like a dog when called ....I. 💘 him best!!!
Awe man, I hate when people declaw cats! So sad that the previous owner did that!
I'm not sure my Benny is a Maine Coon or not, but he has every single quality. Here he is sitting in the sink while I use the restroom. Like having kids all over again.
Another of Benny in his Playgirl Magazine pose. Love my boy.
Your beautiful Benny is most definitely a Maine Coon! If not full, then at least part MC.
Awww...Benny so cute! Looks like a cat that took up at my house except for the color. Wasnt real sure if my cat was Maine Coon but the more cats I see I feel she is at least 1/2 Maine Coon. My kitty doesn't like to be picked up but will gladly give hugs if shes in the mood and she gives great cuddles..
Oh man, Benny is absolutely gorgeous!!!
I have three Maine Coons and sorry, some so-called 'facts' in that article are simply not true. One cannot have the first experience with a cat breed and try to 'sell' their experience as given facts. There are many factors to build the characters of a cat. One of them is the upbringing of the kitten. In my opinion that article needs a lot of re-writing!
Want to get one. Who is the best breeder in Ontario? Thank you!
Check the humane society or animal shelter first. Could get lucky like I did.
I guarantee you 99% of the cats that you get out of a shelter are not Maine Coons they have the characteristics of a Maine Coon but they're not
Hi I have two neutered Male Maine Coons, Hickory and Dickory. Hickory does not like to be picked up but Dickory loves when I pick him up and hold him like a baby. They definitely do not like closed doors. They love to play hockey with an ice cube and like to play in the tub when I get out. This cause their hair to mat if I dont brush quickly. They are so loveable and cuddly. Dickory likes for me to say "roll over doggy" and he will. Hickory acts older and in charge. He is a bit bigger the Dickory but they both are bigger that a small pekinese dog or similar. They have very bushy tails and are very smart. They chirp when I say hello or good morning. I have had many cats but this breed is phenomenal. I love them.
My Maincoon loves to chat. He mimicks my mouth movements. He will aways paw me if I ignore him. He loves laying on my chest. Many timeshe spoons me when he is sleeping. He is the bully among my 2 cats and ten Maltese. He is about 30 pounds. He started really growing in his 5th year
I have one and she’s 16 years old and such a big baby ❤️
I'm sorry, but I have to agree with several other comments on this article. You can't base your "facts" about these cats based on your 7 months of living with a kitten.........I have two Maine coon males. My oldest is currently 20 pounds at two years old, 3 feet
6 inches long the last time I measured him tip of nose to tip of tail, and my younger is 6 months old and already 7 pounds.....the size of a "normal" female cat. Both of them enjoy being picked up and cuddled, the kitten even more so than the older.
They do have a trill when they talk, which they do more than just "meow", but they are not "too loud" or "annoying" about it.
These "specific" diseases are not only specific to this breed. HCM is also found in the sphynx breed among others.
Maine Coons are cats like any other cat.....of course they're going to get up high (cats in general like to be up high...) and knock things over (again.....cats.....).
As far as not "being tame"....um....they are domestic cats, not wild animals....they are "tame" but every single cat has a different personality just like every other living creature.
Maybe come back to this and re-write it after your kitten grows up a bit more and you have more actual experience with the breed.
My oldest....my husband is 6'4
The kitten......that is a standard size roll of paper towels....
Our two are Faith(gray) Maki both have completely different personalities. Maki loves my wife and insists she lay on my wife. Faith is independent but is very loving. Both are vocal and we know what they want when they speak out. Maki is a water player and will make a mess. Both girls are older Maki is 15, Faith is 12. Coons are a great breed and do need TLC.
This is Maki
I have charlie. He is part Maine coon but I haven't told him about the part bit yet ! He knows only that he is full.maine coon.
His brother Ollie has very few Maine coon characteristics But they are both beautiful.. charlie in particular is very demanding . He just wants to be in my lap.all the time. He talks rather loudly and often. We often hold a conversation for twenty minutes or so.
He likes to keep me company on that first all important trip to the loo. Often retreating to the kitchen and coming back to remind me that his dish is empty and can I please come NOW !,Thank you mum !
He and charlie like water to the extent that when we first welcomed them into our home as kitties they used to have a bath every Friday night .
They were and still are fascinated by water.
Charlie and Ollie like nothing better than sitting in front of the TV or the computer until I see sense because I sure as hell.cant see anything else as they sit like a couple of Sphinx safeguarding an Egyptian mummy as they sit on the coffee table in front of my memorable favourite TV programme .
I concede give in to.my two tormentors and go and fetch their Dreamies or some other feline delight
Oh well !
My Lola is going to be 3 soon. She is all and more. Yes she loves to be held, but sometimes she doesnt. She sleeps under the covers. She loves walking the ledge while I shower. She chirps, very little meowing. She is going to be about 20lbs I think. The person who wrote the article was not definitive on any points. She said our babies could, or may, NOT, will or would. Quite a few very defensive. Reread article. It's actually quite spot on.

I have been very fortunate to have had, 1st, a little family of three part Maine Coons who were so Intelligent They really were like living WITH VERY considerate human roommates! When the 2 whom I loved the most became I'll & had to be euthanized, I was "functionally insane" with grief for about a year. Pokey, my soul-mate used to wait til I was settled for sleep & would place his right paw in my right open hand & we'd fall asleep holding hands. One, sweet William, who I adopted years later, would climb on me watching TV & stretch out his full body over mine & just insist on LOOKING ME in my eyes (take off the eyeglasses - I want to really look at you!). We'd look at each other like that until I'd get bored. He was also so bonded to me!! Now, I have AUGIE, & he has become the Ambassador of my apt complex! Roaming freely, after leash training to know where he lives! and making friends with everyone! I trained all of them from kittens to come to my whistle while placing their breakfast down. Also all other meals. So they all used to come to my whistle. They would take long walks with me OFF LEASH because they would listen to my "uh uh!" Command of "no, not there!!" I am quite ill now WITH CHRONIC bronchitis (a form of COPD) & know AUGIE & I will have to find him another human to love eventually. He's only 3 yrs old. But He Loves Me so much, he sticks by me all day, even tho he could go out as he pleases thru the always (daytime) open door. I think he is taking care of me in his own super intelligent way!! BETTER THAN MOST DOGS!! He sleeps with me now every night & has woken me on a couple of occasions when there was something wrong with MY OXYGEN supply & he woke me insistently until I found the problem!! Definitely a "service animal". AUGIE is I believe the most Maine Coon I have had. MAYBE 80%? NEVER HESITATE TO GET A "PART" MAINE COON (also labeled "domestic longhair" from a SHELTER!! THEIR FACE & "LION'S MAIN" AROUND THEIR NECK GIVES IT AWAY -- THIS IS A PART MAINE COON!! Treat them with respect - they "understand" - & you will be SO LOVED!
My love, Charlie.
I have a 7 month old maincoon and he is larger than my 16yr old ragdoll. He found me in the street when he was a baby, and he walked home with me so I kept him.
That's not a Maine coon cat it's so many cats that have characteristics of a Maine Coon the face is too small the paws are too small also
John your right Coons have huge paws and a very distinctive facial features, also something not mentioned are the very large caines they have.
It depends on their bloodline mom dad and past family, mine is only 4 months old and is 24 pounds, you had just got a smaller one of the litter.
My little coon is still a baby and he is mixed. He digs his poop out of his litter box if I haven't cleaned it and he wants to use it again. Only after he has dug it all out and put it in the floor (my floors are wood thank goodness) will he go again. He also has to hunt any food he is given that is not cat food so he bats it around for a ten minutes or so. I never use the bathroom alone and if I shut my bedroom door he will throw himself into it until he knocks it open or I get up and let him in. It is impossible to be sad because he will just aggressively cuddle you until you are laughing. When I am sick he never leaves me unless it's to eat or go potty and then he comes right back. I hope he is like this his whole life. He is absolutely perfect.
Fits my Nala to a tee! She is 9 months old and is very smart. Love her to death.....d is very smart.d is a great cat. She loves water
I have a maincoon cat and this is my 2nd one.Shes fixed and she mostly loves hunting and bringing home her gifts. I find her gifts at the door daily she has a alarm in her head 5pm is her time too come in for the night never not ounce has she been later then 5:30 pm.and she doesn't use a kitty box she goes outside never inside.ive tried many diffrent kitty boxes nothing works. She doesn't like being held but will come to you when she wants attention. Her blue eyes with her colors of her longhair amazing beautiful cat and love her as she is my own child weighs in at about 12 lbs and she looks like a bear.here is baby girl that's her name she loved that name at 8 weeks of age and now 5 years old and still a baby.
I agree with some things about what you have typed out here and some I do not. Maine Coons are big. That's a fact. Saying they will do this or do that is like saying all humans like chocolate ice cream. Well they don't. My Maine Coon enjoys spending time with all members of the family. If you're cat scratches everything and jumps on the table then it sounds more like a lack of disciplinary action on you're part otherwise he/she wouldn't be doing it. I picked this breed of cat for their size and their smarts. It's like any animal though, if you don't raise it right then it will probably be a goof lol. Love My Cedric I do
I've had several MC's, they are a unique and special breed. My first was a female who loved my daughter and wanted nothing to do with me until the day she gave birth; then it was like she knew that Miranda wouldn't be helpful and she started loving on me. She was both our cats, but more partial to Miranda until Miranda died. Afterwards, she always sensed when I was especially sad and was very loving.
She had two babies, also MC's a male and female. The male whose nickname was Pig, was my cat in every sense, he liked my husband but he preferred me. Tess, on the other hand, loved him and tolerated me. They've both joined Miranda, I miss them and would love to have another but don't want to go through the pain of losing another loved one.
One other secret about Maine Coons is that they can get kidney failure when they're young. My Ketzela didn't live even a year, but she was sweet and spirited. I lost her more than 5 years ago and I still miss her. She loved to fetch.
We think we might have an American coon. Everything said about the Maine Coon cats fits ours. She even scares me sometimes and she stalks us. She sleeps in the kitchen sink and bathtub. She loves water from the faucet not her water bowl and we cant show her affection when we want. She's the lil' boss lady in our home. Her name is Emily Binx. She is about 6yrs old in this pic.
These aren't "facts" it's just your opinion from owning one Maine coon for a few months. Many long term and experienced owners and breeders I'm sure would disagree with you on many of these points.
Firstly, they really DO get very big. It's a known fact they're the biggest domestic cat breed. You stated yourself that they take 3-4 years to become fully grown, so telling us your 10 month old kitten isn't that big isnt proof that this breed arent big!
All cats have different personalities, just because yours doesn't like being picked up and cuddled, and your likes playing with water, doesnt mean ALL main coons are like this. And they very much ARE tame.
Also, it IS true that although main coons can miaow properly, they usually dont, and the 'chirp' is very much a main coon feature.
Dont list your own experiences with one individual maine coon cat as "facts".
Lastly, this is my beautiful boy, Jack.
I have a 10 year old Maine Coon called Nev. Most of this description is right but he loves to be picked up for a snuggle. There's nothing to fault with this breed, they make the very best companions. I'll be lost when Nev goes, he is the last one of three brothers, all of whom had very different personalities. Gilbert died aged 1 from giardia virus and Murph aged 5. He just keeled over and died with no prior ill health. It was heart wrenching and since this Nev and I have only had each other. I'm grateful for him every single day. 😻
We have 4 Maine Coons. Each one has very different and distinct personalities. We have 1 who loves to be picked up and cuddled, 1 that tolerates it, and 2 that will come wrap themselves around you, but don't you dare pick them up. My twins, Male and female, will howl at a closed door if they know I'm in that room. The other 2 just wait. We have 2 that will hold long conversations with us, and 2 that mostly just chirp..
All that to say, each one is different and you'll not know what you have until their personalities have time to shine.
This is Blanco, at the time of the picture (last month) he was 6 months old and 10lbs. Very chatty and loves to be cradled in your arms like a baby, whilst he suckles on your ear lobe.
My Murphy was much like you've described. Best cat ever. He loved to be carried like a baby all 22lbs of him. He was like a dog as much as a cat. Went outside every morning with my pups and frequently went out with them throughout the day as well. Never wandered more than 50 feet from the yard and would run back to come in the house when called. He was a rescue and I couldn't have been luckier getting him. I was a dog person my whole life and wasn't happy about the family wanting him. Of course Murphy took to me and it was clear I was hooked too. Murphy has been gone for a year now and we share stories about him still. He'd served his purpose.... we've rescued two. Rest in peace little buddy.
I do also have a Maine Coon he is 28 lb and he's a big lovable giant it doesn't jump up on things he's basically a for cat you're one of the most wonderful animals you could ever have
Hello, some facts not truthfully, it seems to me you are not a Cat person.
First at all, all responsible breeders do not sell any Maincoon kittens to a families with kids under 5 years old.
Second, there are enough another breeds like Persian cats has issue with hearts as well.
Third, it depends how you raise your Maincoon kitten, the one photo shows poor cat in the cage. This is a big No!
You do not keep your cat in the cage.
Cats like freedom, Maicoons like adventure, they are carnivores, they like hunting by nature. Staying in the cage his personalities won't be better, it's not like a dog!
Do you play with your Maincoon?
Do know his personalities? Do you have an enclosure for him he can enjoy outside?
Not all cats loves to be picked up, it's depends from personalities.
We have a Maincoon for 3 years now, best Cat ever! Sweet, lovely giant, smart and devoted to us!
Your article has a facts that not truly about this Breed.
This is Fat BOB and I believe he's a Maine coon.. He's very talkative. He absolutely loves hugs and kisses. He's about a year old and he weighs 15 lbs.
I have a 4 1/2 year old Maine Coon. He waves "hi", dances on command, sits when told to, but won't stay, high fives and plays fetch. He will find his ball when I ask him to. When I take a bath, he stays in the tub until the water is to his ankles and then lays in the edge until I'm finished. He is jealous of every kid that comes in our house...pushing himself between me and child in my lap. He yowls, "ah wa Wawa" before he drinks. I encouraged it and copied it until he automatically does it. Smartest cat we've ever had or even seen. He weighs 19 lbs and is more than 3 ft long. I trim his nails every week unless he bites them off. My son gave him to me for Christmas because I couldn't afford the pricetag...1500 dollars. I adore him.
My cat is 1yr and 8 mos old. He is 12lbs. He has some character of a maine coon. I don't know if he's a maine coon.
Our Frosty was part Maine Coon. She went to the rainbow bridge at the age of 20. She was not a very large girl. She was very vocal, gentle, sweet and funny. And she adored my husband. She was always in his lap or next to him in bed or on the couch. She was a charmer.
I had an american longhair named kitty i got him from someone when he was 3 yrs old he was already fixed and declawed but he took to me right away i had him for about a year when i brought home a kitten that was only about 4 weeks i estimate kitty took to the kitten right away and became his dad. It was fumny to watch them kitty would be trying to teach spaz and all spaz wanted to do was plau but kitty would pin spaz to the floor for a second amd then back to teaching. I loved kitty with all my heart and miss him very much he lived to be around 13 1\2 yrs old when i had him put down due to very poor health but i think of him every day and i hope to get another some day
My "Wolfgang" was a pure bred Maine Coon. He was a lovable 18 lb. Klutz who didn't know he could never really hide as some part of him was always sticking out! Loved making white caps in his large waterr bowl which I placed in the shower stall. Let me say he was the boss! Couldn't stand it when he saw I was getting ready to go out. Stretched out (36" ) in front of the door pretending to be sound
asleep peeking at me with only a slit open. Would NOT MOVE!! I had to pick him up and move him so I could open the door. I really loved his personality, always playing the game by his rules. Maine Coons are very intelligeent and easy to train. Wolfie had his own "apartment" , a room in my apartment complete with sunny window, ladder, shelves, comfy bed, toys, pillows, fish tank etc. He came when called went to bed in his room when I would say, "Go to bed Wolfie." I've always had a cat but he was beyond a doubt the most entertai ning and definitely the most intelligent. Lived til 18 yrs. and I miss him so much. He was born in 2000.
I'm pretty sure this guy has Maine Coon in him, because this describes him to a T, except the intelligence part, because he's kinda dumb, but the sweetest boy. He definitely isn't one for loving unless it's on his own terms, but when he wants it, he wants it.
omg! this explains why my baby is so quirky #mainecoon
